Teachers Without Borders, an inspiring organisation

“A teacher is not only a community leader, but must educate for global citizenship and participation.” (Fred Mednick)

Teachers Without Borders is an international non-profit organisation that was originally launched in 2000.  The organisation was founded by Dr. Fred Mednick to bring about lasting change on a global scale by connecting teacher leaders to information, and to each other.  Reading about Dr. Mednick is truly motivational and his guiding thoughts and ethos with regard to teachers being the catalysts for change in the community is inspiring.

His education, professional history, career highlights, expertise, commendations and awards are beyond impressive.  For a personal insight into the man behind this forward thinking organisation there is a link to the Founder’s Free Book entitled; ‘Outside My Window,’ and if you read nothing else today I would highly recommend that you take the time to read the chapter entitled; ‘Meeting Jane.'  It is a beautifully written, heartfelt account of Fred’s first meeting with Jane Goodall and tells of their ensuing friendship over the years.  Rather than ‘Outside My Window’ I feel that this book should be called ‘Inside My Soul.’

Teachers Without Borders in short, works towards bridging the education divide by removing barriers to education through promoting free and open use of collective wisdom generated by teacher leaders from every culture to help all teachers work more effectively.

The organisation focuses on nine key initiatives: Girl’s Education, Peace Education, Quake Science and Safety, Education in Emergencies, ICT in Education, Bridges To Understanding, Bullying, Child Friendly Spaces and Teachers Without Borders Legacy Projects.

Each initiative leads to courses, resources and more, instigating innovative avenues of change through educational enterprises, all working towards a common goal to bridge the education divide, through a globally connected community of practice. 'Our strength is our network' (TWB, 2017).
